Teenage pregnancy is one of the leading causes of suicide in the Central American country of 6 million people. Three out of eight maternal deaths in El Salvador are the result of suicide among pregnant girls under 19, latest government figures show. Many of these girls have not only suffered sexual abuse at the hands of relatives, stepfathers or gang members, but they are also often silenced and prevented from seeking help by the stigma surrounding rape. Pregnancy is a determining factor behind teenage suicides. El Salvador has one of the highest rates of teenage pregnancy in Latin America, with girls aged 10 to 19 accounting for nearly a third of all pregnancies in the country last year.

Veronica O'Keane, a consultant at Tallaght Hospital, argued that new laws on abortion were needed to save the lives of women believed to be a suicide risk. She said while it was rare for a woman to take her own life during pregnancy, suicide after birth is the leading cause of maternal death overall. It's a leading cause of death in pregnancy and it's also rare," Prof O'Keane said.

Paedophile Nicholas Deon Thrash , 35, has now filed a legal appeal claiming he is being punished too harshly - despite first abusing the child when she was just eight. The sex fiend also believes it was "inappropriate" to show jurors at his trial a photo of his victim and her newborn baby in hospital, WUSA9 reported. Prosecutors in Indiana have responded to his supreme court appeal by saying they did nothing wrong and are confident his legal move will fail. Thrash was found guilty in September of 10 counts of molestation beginning when the girl was just eight years old.
